I had just finished playing a gig at a retirement facility where the audience was much smaller than usual but I didn't mind....it seemed to lend itself to a more intimate feel with them. As I was collecting my things to leave a lady who had been there to listen softly asked if she could share a memory with me. I went over and sat down by her . She was a tiny little lady with a sweet face and I could feel her gratitude.
She started to speak but then paused, as if she was trying hard to push out the words through the lump in her throat. Then tears welled up in her eyes and she begin telling me her story while alligator tears rolled down her smile-lined cheeks. She said that when I played the song Red Sails In The Sunset, a memory came up in her mind's eye that she hadn't remembered in a long while. She told me of how her mom and dad would dance to that song by the jukebox at the local cafe. She told me how she could remember the way her dad would hold her mom so close while they danced to that very song. And she remembers how it was so amazing to watch him look at her mom with such loving eyes. She knew from those times, how much inlove they were. She and I sat there for a while and talked about some more things that the music spurred up in her memory and I found myself wiping the corner of my own eyes as she painted her reminiscent pictures for me. She made my day.

A side note from Bren.......On many occasions, people I play for come up to me after my gig and comment about a song or two I just played. ArchivesCategories |
